VC Haruna

Professor Haruna Musa is a distinguished Nigerian academic, administrator, and the 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK). He was born on 20th June 1967 in Dambatta, Kano State.

He began his early education at Sabuwar Unguwa Primary School, Dambatta (1974–1980), and later attended Government Secondary School, Dambatta (1980–1985). In 1988, he proceeded to the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano, before gaining admission into Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry in 1991. He further earned an M.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry from BUK in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2009, under the supervision of Prof. Terence Cosgrove.

Prof. Musa joined Bayero University, Kano in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Chemistry in 2019. With over 32 years of academic experience, he has supervised more than 300 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students, published 52 peer-reviewed journal articles and 8 book chapters, and delivered papers at over 40 local and international conferences. His research collaborations extend to leading institutions in the UK, USA, India, Senegal, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. He has also championed high-impact projects, including a ₦36 million zinc-air battery initiative and several internationally funded research grants on plastics recycling.

In addition to his academic contributions, Prof. Musa has provided exemplary administrative leadership within the university. He has served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), where he chaired the Senate Business Committee and the Committee of Deans and Directors. He previously held several other key positions, including Head of Department, Postgraduate Coordinator, Sub-Dean, and Deputy Director at CREST, the Centre of Excellence in BUK. He has also represented the Congregation in the University Senate, Management Committee, and Governing Council.

On 18th August 2025, the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano appointed Professor Haruna Musa as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the institution, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the university into its next phase of growth, innovation, and global collaboration.
