The Bayero University, Kano has inducted 87 newly qualified Medical Doctors and 16 Dentists from the Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Dentistry of the College of Health Sciences (CHS).
The induction ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, 14th May, 2024 at Mahmud Tukur Theatre, Old Campus, marked the 23rd induction for MBBS and 9th Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in the University.
While administering the oath of allegiance to the inductees, the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Fatima Kyari, told the new doctors that by the oath they had taken, they must abide by rules and regulations governing the professions. She enjoined them to respect their senior colleagues and treat their patients with utmost respect and confidence.
Dr. Kyari, while congratulating the new doctors on the induction, disclosed that portal for horsemanship had been introduced by the Council for selection of any of the 113 available hospitals across the federation, adding that those who were willing to choose either of the private or state owned hospitals were free to do so.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, the Acting Chief Medical Director, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Professor Auwalu Umar Gajida, congratulated the new doctors and admonished them on the ethics of the profession, adding that they were trained to save lives.
He said the AKTH was committed towards improving the facilities for training doctors, adding that the AKTH awaited its selection through the MDCN portal by the new doctors during their internship.
In his speech, the Medical Elder, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, mni, who spoke on Medical Education, admonished and educated the new doctors to continue to take their studies seriously, attend conferences, seek mentorship and treat their patients with respect and humility. He also tasked them to go to work early and have time for relaxation. He stressed that “a minute in medical profession is between life and death,” Prof. Yakasai, mni, has stressed.
Prof Yakasai informed the new doctors that they have the choice of places to work either to join the University and become lecturers or join the federal or state government to become administrators. They could as well join Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or even join the military force, according to Prof Yakasai.
Welcoming the new doctors to their professional associations, the chairmen of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Kano, Branch, Dr. Abdullahi Kabir Suleiman and Dental Association, Dr. Mashood Oyeneyin, advised the new doctors to obey the rules and regulations of the practice.
Also speaking, the representative of the Ministry of Health, Kano State, Dr. Bashir Usman celebrated the new doctors and informed them that the state government is committed towards improving the health sector. He advised the inductees to select the Ministry in doing their internships.
In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas on behalf of the Management and staff of the University, congratulated the graduands, lecturers, parents and well-wishers on the 9th BDS and 23rd MBBS induction ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Mahmoud Umar Sani, described the induction of the new doctors as timely, when the country is in dire need of their services especially in this era that brain-drain took away many of young bright minds.
He encouraged the new doctors at the beginning of their service to humanity to join their senior colleagues and medical elders to contribute to the success of the profession.
Prof. Abbas tasked the new doctors to show respect, dedication, save lives, dignity, and honour as the profession commanded. He then charged them to always remember their alma-mater, Bayero University, Kano wherever they find themselves.
Earlier, in her welcome address, the Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. Aisha Kuliya-Kwarzo advised them to continue to learn empathy, respect elders, patients and uphold secret of information that would be given to them by the patients.
Prof. Kuliya-Gwarzo also charged the inductees to always develop their interpersonal relationship to make positive impact with the diverse health care work-force. She also advised the new doctors to collaborate and possess strong skills that would enable them to navigate positively through their careers.
In their separate remarks, the Class Captains of the MBBS and BDS, Dr. Muhammad Murtala Abdullahi and Dr. Abdurrazak Ka’abu Adam, who spoke on behalf of the inductees, thanked the University management, parents and lecturers for their support and prayers and advised their colleagues to be resilient, curious and kind in the discharge of their duties.
Dr. Muhammd Murtala Abdullahi emerged the overall best graduating MBBS student and Dr. Fatima Ismail Yusuf bagged the overall best student in BDS programme.
