The Centre for Gender Studies (CGS) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender-related initiatives by renewing its mandate and enhancing its human resource capacity.
The Director of the Centre, Dr. Ambassador Safiya Nuhu, made this known on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas.
She expressed gratitude to the University Management for approving the appointment of Deputy Directors to the Centre and used the occasion to brief the Vice-Chancellor on CGS’s revitalized vision and strategic initiatives.
Dr. Nuhu emphasized that the new appointments signify the University’s shared commitment to addressing pressing societal challenges through gender-focused research and community engagement. She also disclosed that the Centre would be marking its 10th anniversary in 2025 and has intensified efforts in training programmes, research, collaborations, and impactful projects.
One notable partnership is the “Knowledge for Change” initiative, a collaborative effort with universities in Canada and Uganda aimed at addressing gender-based issues through research and capacity building.
Dr. Nuhu presented her team members:
- Dr. Adama Jibrin (Department of Human Physiology) – Deputy Director, Research
- Dr. Samir Halliru (Department of Adult Education and Community Services) – Deputy Director Knowledge Transfer
- Dr. Maryam Liman (Department of Environmental Management) – Deputy Director, Training
- Dr. Zahra’u Umar Idris (Department of Sociology) – Councillor, Confidential Corner, a flagship initiative of the Centre focused on providing safe spaces for gender-related dialogue and support
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas commended the Centre for its renewed energy and initiatives. He assured the team of the University’s continued support in tackling societal issues, particularly in reinforcing family values, promoting cultural heritage, and instilling positive moral upbringing.
He encouraged the Centre to explore innovative solutions to contemporary challenges facing women and youth, including drug abuse, and to leverage its expertise in securing internal and external funding for sustainability.
The CGS delegation was received in the company of top University officials including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Aliyu Mu’azu; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Amina Mustapha; Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu; Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Malam Sheriff Ahmad; and Head, Special Services, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Barrister Hadiza Jummai Mohammed.
