The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Bayero University, Kano, on Friday, 5th September 2025, rolled out the drums to honour the Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, for a groundbreaking one year in office marked by milestone achievements and reforms that touched the lives of staff and advanced the University’s progress.
Speaking at the colourful reception, SSANU Chairman, Comrade Mustapha Aminu, said the union could not allow the anniversary to pass quietly. He described the Registrar’s first year as one defined by justice, equity, and genuine commitment to staff development. According to him, Aliyu’s swift facilitation of the long-stalled SSANU–Federal Government 2009 Agreement unlocked long-delayed promotions, elevating Deputy Registrars to Senior Deputy Registrars. Even more significantly, he secured the reduction of the promotion cycle from CONTISS 13 to 14 from four years to three—injecting fresh hope and energy into the system.
Goodwill messages poured in from dignitaries including the Northwest Vice-President of SSANU, Comrade Sabo Balarabe Wudil, the Northwest Women’s Coordinator, Hauwa Abdullahi Dambatta, the University Bursar, Alhaji Rabiu Dauda, the Director of Establishment, Shehu Galadima, as well as representatives of NASU and NAAT. They commended the Registrar’s ingenuity, modesty, and visible reforms within just one year in office.
In his response, Malam Haruna Aliyu expressed deep appreciation to SSANU for the recognition, stressing that his achievements were made possible by the collective efforts of the University community. He acknowledged the contributions of the late Registrar, Malam Jamil Salim, former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, and other colleagues whose dedication, he said, laid the foundation for progress.
Calling for a culture of accountability, Aliyu urged staff not only to commend him for his successes but also to challenge and correct him whenever necessary. “I remain firmly committed to staff welfare, a conducive working environment, and the overall prosperity of Bayero University,” he assured.
As part of the event, SSANU also extended compassion to four recently retired staff members—Hassan Sale Bako, Umar Nuhu Dambatta, Aliyu Musa Fagge, and Ibrahim Halilu Muhammad—with cash gifts of ₦150,000 each, in recognition of their years of service.
Highlighting the Registrar’s achievements, SSANU Secretary, Comrade Nura Garba, declared: “For his outstanding record of achievement, his commitment to justice and equity, his innovation and compassion, and his tireless service to staff and the entire BUK community, we proudly present Malam Haruna Aliyu for the prestigious SSANU Award of Recognition.”
The evening ended with thunderous applause, as members of the University community celebrated a leader whose one year in office has already left an indelible mark on Bayero University, Kano.
