Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has once again asserted its dominance in university sports after an impressive outing at the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Zone E Preliminaries held at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil. The University’s athletes qualified for 13 different sporting events, earning BUK a strong representation at the forthcoming NUGA 2025 Games scheduled to take place at the University of Jos.

Facing off against other top institutions — including Northwest University, Kano; Federal University, Dutse; Sule Lamido University, Kafinhausa; and the host university — BUK athletes displayed exceptional discipline, teamwork, and determination. The University recorded outstanding victories in volleyball (male and female) and basketball (male and female), while also qualifying in football (female), tennis (male and female), squash, taekwondo, athletics, and hockey, among others.

Speaking shortly after the preliminaries, the Director of Sports, Professor Rabi’u Mohammed, expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ performances, describing them as a testament to BUK’s longstanding commitment to sports excellence. He praised their courage and resilience throughout the competition, adding that their qualification in 13 sports was the result of collective effort and preparation. Professor Mohammed further commended the coaches, technical team, and deputy directors for their professionalism, and expressed deep appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, for his financial and moral support that made the University’s participation seamless.

Before the contingent departed for Wudil on Monday, October 27, 2025, Professor Mohammed had urged the athletes to compete with integrity, focus, and excellence, reminding them that they were ambassadors of one of Nigeria’s most respected universities. His confidence proved well-founded as the teams lived up to expectations. Supporting his message, Deputy Directors of Sports, Professor Aliyu Madaki (Technical) and Malam Ahmad Tijjani Salisu Sa’id (Administration), encouraged the athletes to uphold discipline and teamwork. The Chief Football Coach, Ibrahim Isyaku Ibrahim, also advised them to exhibit good character and respect for opponents. On behalf of the athletes, Baba Faith Eze from the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education pledged the team’s determination to make BUK proud — a promise they have fulfilled with distinction.
